Tori Miller Blog post # 3 Routman (2003), Ch. 3: Share Your Reading Life ( October)

3
Share Your Reading Life was one chapter that really hit my weakness…READING!! Early in my life I can’t recall anyone sitting down and reading to me. I had two really good parents but reading wasn’t a major part of their lives growing up so they didn’t see it as a major part of their children’s lives either. I remember my kindergarten teacher reading to me often and then I don’t remember another teacher reading to me until my 3rd grade year, she read The Boxcar Children. Due to this, my current reading habits really suffer. I have to make myself read and often read again because my mind wonders to a thousand other things as I’m reading. Being a kindergarten teacher has help my reading habits a little but reading is still my weakest area.

In this reading, I like when the author spoke about examining your own life and making it visible to the students. This is a great idea that I feel will provide me with “a reason to read.” Since I’ve had my daughter (17 months ago) I have increased the amount of reading I do, especially to her! I started reading to her as she was growing in the womb and she loves books. I read at least three books a day to her and most of the time it’s much more. She has a full book shelf in her room, basket of books in the living room, books in the car, and books in her diaper bag. My personal library at home isn’t that big but my daughter has a good collection of books. I plan to use her library of books to show pictures to my students as suggested in this article. The most interesting sentence in this article to me was when it stated on page 27 that “Kindergarten students who do well in school own more than fifty books, at a minimum.” Wow! This is amazing.

This article has gave me a little encouragement and a bigger desire to read.

  1. Tori,
I love that you read to Payton when you were pregnant. I'm going to start doing that too. Though I have bookshelves full of books, I am trying to decide which book should be the special "first book" I read to him when he is finally here. I know that you understand how important the teacher's role is in a child's reading life since your kindergarten teacher was one of the first to read to you on a regular basis. Let me know what your students think of Payton's library when you show them!

  2. Hi Tori,
Thank you for sharing your reading experiences with us and with your students. I love the idea of sharing with your students how you read to Payton and to share the books that you read to her and that are in her library every day. Sharing your love for reading to her and sharing how you read three books each day to her can be a powerful motivator to our students to want to read as well. I would love to encourage the habit of reading to your students at least three books a day as well! You could even make a list of what books Payton reads and what books they read and a top 10 or favorite book list! Thank you! Dawn
